Contemporary Democratic Chair
This is my interpretation of Curtis Buchanan’s Democratic chair (look him up. He’s amazing.) @curtisbuchananchairmaker
I added some of my own styling; notably: lowered the crest rail, fanned out the seat, and rounded over the facets with a fine edged knife I bought from @jasonlonontoolmaker (push/pull knife), and did all the finishing end grain touches with a sloyd knife forged by fellow local @plus5armory.
The upper and lower parts are made from a mix of red and white oak that I harvested by hand from field. All the parts were split by hand using wedges. The seat slab came from a local pine tree that had been felled after Laura and milled by a friend. Air dried since milling. These seats have so much character.
The final result is a product that is influenced heavily by the work of the mid-century modernists but joined using the traditional Windsor techniques of centuries past. Height: 38.5
Width at crest rail: 20~ Width of saddle: 18.25
Length of saddle: 17.5
Footprint: width: 21~; length: 20~
